Loretta June Lawrence, age 80, passed away at her home in French Lick, Indiana, on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 14, 2021. Before moving to French Lick in the spring of 2021, she lived the last three decades of her life in her childhood home in Tell City, IN. Always known as June, she was born to parents Edward and Mary Eva (Coultas) Lawrence on June 1, 1941.
She is preceded in death by her parents. Two children in infancy: Charles Edward and Autumn Rose. Brothers: Leonard, Jim, Gilbert, and Tom. Sisters: Millie, Sarah, Amy, and Bertha. Several nieces and nephews and a granddaughter, Autumn Sunshine James. Pet companions: Mia, Hambone, and Sissy.
Five children survive June: Roxann J Boswell of Daggett, CA, Kelly J Poehlein, Sunshine L
Brunner, and Eva Brunner of Tell City, IN, and John R Brunner Jr.(Tammi) of French Lick, IN.
Ten grandchildren: Chris Cortright and Taime Rubal, Rachael, Justin and Kyle Brunner, Travis and Zachary James, Lyndy and Lucy Whistle, and Madison Sites. As well as granddogs: Roxie,
Cooper, Otis, and her favorite “Lil Red” (Toby).
A beloved and respected mother and grandmother, June’s strength, courage, and calm in the face of her life’s challenges taught her children valuable lessons on how never to give up and how always to take one day at a time. Our mother placed the highest value on our health and happiness. She was always ready to cook a bite to eat and send home groceries or vitamins to ensure we were taking care of ourselves. She said her greatest accomplishments were the good people we turned out to be.
June was an accomplished oil painter and mural artist, animal lover, and skilled gardener and cook. She never missed a chance to debate political issues and always stayed current on national and local events. June was an avid reader and student of life who loved watching movies and television series as well as enjoying many genres of music.
Although her childhood and adult years were primarily lived in Perry County, her early adult family life led her to explore the western states. She shared with her children many cherished memories of Oregon, Colorado, and Oklahoma adventures with her sister Millie in the early 1960s. She was skilled at many trades and possessed exceptional artistic talents, leading to various employment and volunteer opportunities. June started in the workforce young in the
1950s as a babysitter, then moved on to sell fire alarm and a property owner and landlord for rentals in the late 1960s, to being a laborer at Tell City Chair Factory(1970s)and a portrait artist at Santa Claus Land (Holiday World), a lay minister for the United Methodist Church, Owner of the Physical Fitness Center, Store Manager at Family Dollar, and Manager of Rexall Drug Store
in the 1980s. In 1991, she started working for the State of Indiana and in 2003, June retired from the Branchville Training Center as a Correctional Officer after 12 years of dedicated service but returned to the workforce as it was in her nature to stay busy and productive to work at Masterbrand Cabinets and then eventually the Perry County Detention Center as a cook.
When she finally retired entirely from the workforce, her joy was found in visits with her children and grandchildren, gardening, painting murals and sculptures, feeding the birds and squirrels, and the companionship of her beloved dogs, Mia, Hambone, and Sissy.
The family of June Lawence would like to graciously extend special acknowledgment to Heart to Heart Hospice Care for the blessing of their presence and guidance during our mother’s final days.
