Evansville, IN – Nancy Lynn (Erwin) Vela, 77, of Evansville, passed away peacefully on Sunday January 01, 2023 surrounded by family.
Nancy was born on April 28, 1945 to the late Ola and Notre (Heath) Erwin. She was the second youngest of four children, and the only daughter.
Nancy’s spirited personality and sass made her the life of the party. She was a loving caring individual that treasured her family and friends. She lived life to the fullest and embraced every moment. Nancy’s simple pleasures were chatting on the phone with friends and family. She especially loved her role as “Nana”, because her grandchildren were her heart and joy.
Surviving Nancy are a daughter Renee Fisher; a granddaughter Amber (Fisher) Basham (whom she raised as her daughter); a grandson Jordan Fisher; a great grandson Gavin Fuller; two great granddaughters Chloe Basham and Kayli Basham; and Joy Lonas (whom she loved as her other daughter); two brothers Ronald Erwin and Reynold (Trish) Erwin; sister-in-law Sue (Vickers-Erwin) Jones; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her brother Richard Erwin and nephew Todd Erwin.
Family, friends, and others whose lives Nancy touched are invited to a Celebration of Life service that will be held at Salem United Methodist Church, 6311 Kratzville Rd in Evansville on Saturday January 14, 2023. Family visitation 1 pm – 2pm; open visitation 2pm – 3pm; services to begin at 3pm.

I was just a niece by marriage but from the day I met her, Nancy made me feel like family and I was happy to consider her my aunt too. I will miss her beautiful smile, her hugs, and the love she she had for her family and friends.

I have to many cheer day stories to share. Nancy was a great Nana and mom. One of the best times we had together was at Myrtle Beach at a cheer comp. Nancy was a loving person and she will be missed by all that were blessed to know her.
