David A Lucas of Lynnville Indiana passed away on April 30, 2024 at the age of 84. Dave was born in Evansville on March 12, 1940 to Willard R. Lucas, Jr. and Fanny E. Shofner Lucas. He spent his life documenting history through the lens of a camera with what only can be described as the keenest of eyes. Dave spent his entire professional career as a photographer for the Evansville newspapers and retired as photo editor after 40 years of service. He never took a day off from honoring his art and profession. He took great pride in always capturing the proper moment, be it on the sidelines of a high school basketball game, a lunch with Robert Kennedy, a day with Satchel Page (Satch gave him a chance to hit off him… It didn’t go well), aftermaths of tragedies which were too many to count, or just capturing the right image of the Willard Library. Among his many accomplishments, he had photos in publications ranging from the Weekly Reader to National Geographic Magazine. He was most comfortable in the woods photographing the beauty of nature and was most proud of the deer that would eat from his hand. His contribution to photography in Evansville has been valued by many.
As a person he leaves a legacy of humility and love of his family and this beautiful earth. Dave leaves behind a loving wife of 40 years, Andree B. Ireland who faithfully cared for him over the last few years through his struggles with dementia. He is also survived by his step children and grandchildren who loved him and will miss him greatly. They are Drew and Anna Ireland with their children Emily and Elizabeth, Tiffany and John Stream with their children Caroline, Trey, Jack and Alex, Lindsey Robak and her children Emma, Andrew, and Casey. He is also survived by a daughter Tracy from a previous marriage. Dave was pre-deceased by his parents and a sister Carol.
Per his wishes, there will be no visitation or public services.

I feel privileged to have worked with Dave at the Evansville Courier & Press where he weathered many changes with much appreciated calm and confidence. He was well-respected by the photo staff and in the newsroom. One staffer fondly called him “Uncle Dave.”
I offer Andy and his family my heart-felt sympathy.

The news of Dave’s passing opened a floodgate of the fondest memories. Dave was a beacon of happiness in what would have been an otherwise unfulfilling job — he could always be counted on to deliver a laugh and a smile. The support I received from Dave and Andie was a gesture that I will never forget. My heartfelt condolences Andie…peace my friend.
