Wanda Tirey

 

On September 21, 2024 Wanda Tirey passed away at Ascension St. Vincent Evansville Hospital.  She was 84 years old.

Wanda Lee Curneal was born in Madisonville Ky, it was a large family with a total of 10 kids. She was a middle child and spent most of her time helping take care of her younger siblings. In her little free time, she loved to roller skate. It was at this skate rink she met her future husband.

After marrying Merle “Gene” Tirey, she became a mother herself and moved from Nortonville Ky to Henderson Ky. There she was a stay-at-home wife and mother.

When they purchased a home on Lieber St. She decided she would start babysitting neighborhood kids because she loved children, and she wanted to earn extra spending money to take to yard sales and buy toys and what she called “what nots”.

Eventually the family grew, and they bought a house on a larger piece of property.  There she helped her husband renovate their house. Later on, the two of them would build a smaller home on the same property from scratch.

It was there she discovered she loved taking care of animals and gardening. They had a large garden and fruit trees. There was one large apple tree that you might have on occasion caught her climbing!

She developed a passion for sewing and doing embroidery work. That passion led her to making beautiful quilts for many people over the years.

She also loved photography. She always carried a camera in her purse “just in case” she saw a random animal, a “neat” car, pretty flowers (she loved flowers) or just someone she knew, especially little ones!

Wanda started attending the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the very early 70s. She enjoyed the fellowship of the brothers and sisters, attending the meetings and going out in service.

Wanda lived a long, happy life and was loved by many. She will be sorely missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Ada Lee Curneal, two brothers, David and Leonard, 6 sisters, Betty Curneal, Bonnie Bracket Lee, Mary Lou Franklin, Estelle Ipock, Brenda Sue Crowley and Barbara Skimehorn.

Her husband Merle Eugene “Gene” Tirey and son, Michael Eugene also preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughter Dorothy Tirey Grzegorczyk and brother Roger Curneal, 6 grandchildren, Jeremiah Eugene Pressley (Qing) Rachel Lee Weisgerber(Brandon), Randy A. Gilmore (Mandy), Steven O. Gilmore(Sara), Ashley Crook and Lillian Tirey, 8 great granddaughters and 8 great grandsons,  and two great great grandsons.

 

There will be a memorial service held on Saturday 1pm, September 28, 2024 at

The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses

480 Klutey Park Dr., Henderson Kentucky.
