Charles Eldon Julius, of Henderson, KY, died July 2, 2024 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
He was a long-time set designer, tech director and stage manager for Evansville Civic Theater but he will also be remembered as a teacher/mentor/friend – and occasional therapist — to a legion of young and some not-so-young community theater aficionados.
During his tenure at Civic (1990 to 1993 and then again from 1999 until his retirement in 2020), he designed and built stage sets for more than 130 productions.
Charles was born Aug. 18, 1954 in Okeene, OK and spent his childhood in Enid, Ok. He had a bachelor’s degree in theater from Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts in Chickasha, OK and a Master’s degree in technical theater from Emporia (KA) State University.
Charles worked as tech director for several years at Theatre Tulsa in Tulsa, Oklahoma. While there he built, lit and did sound for many dramatic productions as well as major musicals. He also designed sets and tech directed for other area theatre companies including the American Indian Theatre Company and the Claremore Community Theatre.
He worked as a set designer at University of Arkansas/Fort Smith for a brief time.
Charles moved to Evansville in 1990 with his wife and family and joined Civic Theater in the fall of that year.
Charles is survived by his wife Vicki Julius; son Charlton Julius (Neema); daughter Jennifer Vire (Tim); three grandsons; Brett, Brock (Robyn) and Bryce Vire, one granddaughter; Chloe Julius and one great grand-baby on the way.
He is also survived by a sister, Roberta (ulius) Branscum; nephews Timothy and Christopher Branscum; two great nieces, two great-great nieces and a great-great nephew.
Taylor Branscum says
I am Roberta’s grand daughter. I remember when I was younger taking many trips out to see Eldon. He was an amazing man, husband, father, and brother. I enjoy hearing all of the stories my grandmother, his sister, has to share.
I am praying for everyone’s peace and healing at this time.
Pamela Emick Metscher says
So sorry to hear of Eldon’s passing. I grew up with him in Enid and spent a lot of time playing at his house. He was a good friend when we were in grade school at Roosevelt Elementary school and have a lot of good memories of him and his Mom and Dad.
