Donald “Scott” Hurn passed away peacefully in his home on July 1, 2024.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald A. Hurm; stepfather, Roger Garrett; siblings, Roger A. Garrett, Karen Leistner, and Connie Reader.
He is survived by his mother, Donna M. Garrett; siblings, Vicki Davis (Kevin), Donna Jean Garrett, Sharri Nulton (Rusty), Derrick Garrett (JoAnn), and Tony Garrett; plus many nephews, nieces, and cousins. Two nephews Jaidon Parkman and Eric Cabell shared his home whom he was very close to.
Scott was born on August 7, 1975. He attended Hedges Elementary and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1993. Scott as a child loved to ride and often would wear out two hot wheels in a season. As he got older, bike riding became his passion as he often rode miles every day. One day he and a friend rode their bikes from Mt. Vernon to Evansville. They later regretted it. He became a great swimmer, spending time with family and friends. When he became an adult, he was a truck driver for a few years and also bought himself a motorcycle. He finally got rid of the motorcycle after, as he called it, “laying it down too often.”
Scott was always a hard worker. At 12 he started a paper route which he did for several years. As a teen he detasseled corn in the summer. As an adult, other than truck driving, he worked as a lineman in factories.
Scott loved music, often making up silly songs that he loved singing to his family. He also loved cooking, especially grilling and smoking meats.
Scott was a kind and generous man who loved his family, especially his nephews Jaidon and Eric. He helped Jaidon build an electric motor for 4H and taught Eric how to sword play. A beloved friend of the family, Sandy Sanders, he would text or call her daily to make sure she was okay.
His mother cared for him during his last couple of years. The family will miss hearing him telling them that he loved them and they replying in return that they loved him too. After Scott passed, Eric said the house was too quiet. Yes, it is way too quiet.
A memorial service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 736 Smith Rd., Mt. Vernon, IN 47620 at 11:00 a.m. on July 20, 2024.

I was like the crazy Aunt to Scott! We texted every day. He wanted to always make sure I was okay, since I am a widow and live alone in the country. Scott was very sweet and generous and always concerned about everyone else’s welfare! He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed!
