Earl David Sussman passed away peacefully at home in Evansville, IN
surrounded by loved ones on September 18, 2024, at the age of 86.
Born in Chicago, he grew up on the north side in West Roger’s Park where he
spent his childhood going to Cubs games and watching movies at his family’s
Adelphi Theater. He married his true love, Elaine Glickman, in 1962. They
raised their family in Skokie, IL—just a quick “EL” ride from Wrigley Field. Earl
earned a bachelor’s degree from Roosevelt University and two master’s
degrees from Northeastern Illinois University. He spent 32 years teaching
Science and Special Education in the Chicago Public Schools and 26 years
retired, which he was almost as proud of. Though they never thought they
would leave their much-loved Chicago, late in life Earl and Elaine moved to
Indiana to be cared for by their daughter and granddaughters, who they
adored.
Sussman means “Sweet Man,” and he was one. He is now reunited with his
beloved Elaine in the afterlife, along with other family members who went
before him—his parents Amelia Sussman (nee Oppenheim) and Morris
Sussman, brother-in-law Sheldon Glickman, sister-in-law Barbara Glickman
(nee Wallace), and grandson Tyler Barr. He is survived by his son RJ
Sussman, and daughter Jessica Barr, their spouses Diana Brawley Sussman
and Gary Barr, grandchildren Peter Sussman, Juliana, Joy, and Jenna Pajdo,
and Madison Barr, niece and nephew Gayle and Robert Glickman and their
families, beloved friends Bonnie and Jim Arbetter, and many others who will
remember him fondly.
The family will be celebrating his life with a small service at home on
Wednesday, September 25th. Friends are invited to visit from 7:00 – 9:00 pm.
Memorial contributions can be made to Perry Township Volunteer Fire
Department, 5201 Middle Mt. Vernon Rd., Evansville, IN 47712. The family
wishes to extend their deepest thanks to LeAnn Bixby and to everyone at
Heart to Heart Hospice for their exceptional care and kindness.
